Customizing Your CAVES Experience

Oliver says that VRUI is “ridiculously configurable”. Thus, you can probably do more than you want to. However, you also don't have to do anything. Right now, there are two things you might want to play with. The first is making a personal configuration file that will override selected settings in the public configuration file. Things you might want to consider include setting include the left and right eye locations relative to the tracker in the glasses for better stereo viewing (if your eyes are not 2.5 inches apart) or the background color. You can also change the rendering to have a fixed stereo projection location or change the rendering to mono. Make a Personal Configuration File focuses on those changes because that is what Dawn needed. At some point, Oliver will upload a list of all configurable parameters and Ed will make a GUI for doing this. For now, you can look at this file to see the default settings: /usr/local/Vrui-1.0/etc/Vrui.cfg (Not sure this is still the correct location 5/2/09 dys.)

The second thing to start thinking about is the idea of vislets, which are programs that run in conjunction with the main VRUI application. Right now, the only vislet displays the CAVES logo on the cave walls. However, long term, vislets could be used to customize your “desktop” or “wall” experience.
