Steps for using the VruiVNC tool to export data from the Cave to your own computer.

1. Start Screen sharing. (Instructions for Mac OS 10.5)
   1. Open System Preferences
   2. Go to Sharing
   3. Click on the box next to Screen Sharing to turn it on. If you get a notice that sharing is controlled by “Remote Management”, turn off “Remote Management”, which is lower in the list, and then turn on “Screen Sharing”.
   4. Click on the button Computer Settings…
   5. Click on “VNC viewers may control screen with password:” and enter a good password.
2. Look up the IP address of the receiving computer. (Instructions for Mac OS 10.5)
   1. In System Preferences, go to Network
   2. If you are connect via ethernet (highly recommended), the IP address is on the first page.
   3. If you are connected via airport (also works, but slow), go to “Advanced” and choose TCP/IP.
3. Open an application to receive data.
   1. Excel, text editor, etc. all work.

~shared/VruiConfig/Vnc.cfg is an example config file that will use the VNC tool with the Mac in the CAVE room. e.g. to run ShowEarthModel with VncTool:

ShowEarthModel -mergeConfig ~shared/VruiConfig/Vnc.cfg

If you'd like to connect to a different computer, please copy the above config file and edit it accordingly.

When using the above config without modification, you'll get an error message like:

ToolManager::loadDefaultTools: Ignoring tool binding VncToolAssignment
 due to exception Configuration file tag "deviceName0" not found in section
 "/Vrui/caveman.geology.ucdavis.edu/Tools/VncToolAssignment"

However, the VncTool should still appear in your tool menu, so try not to worry too much about it.

1. With the button of your choice, choose “vnc” from the menu. A window should pop up.
2. With the main menu button, click on the IP address toward the right of the window. A giant keyboard should appear.
3. Using the main menu button, type in the Screen Sharing password that you set on the receiving computer followed by “enter”.
4. The vnc window should now show the desktop of the receiving computer. The main menu button will allow you to choose a window on your desktop, drag windows, etc.
5. Click on the window that you want to receive the data. Note that sending data to some programs can cause problems, so be very careful that your Excel, text editor, etc. window is highlighted.
6. Click on the button “Enable data beaming”.
7. Choose any other tool such as the measurement tool or open a window such as “Element List”.
8. To beam the data to the receiving computer, point at the window containing the data you want to send and click on the button assigned to the vnc tool. A yellow box will graphically illustrate where the data are coming from and where they are going. The data should appear in the window of the receiving computer, visible in the vnc window in the cave. If it doesn't, check that the correct window on the receiving computer is highlighted.
9. When finished, click on the IP address to log off the receiving computer.
10. On the computer that received the data:
11. BE ABSOLUTELY SURE TO TURN OFF “Screen Sharing” WHEN FINISHED. It is a substantial security hazard to have screen sharing enabled because anyone who connects can control everything on your computer.
12. Save your data.

• “Auto-beam” is not working in a way that is easy to explain, so do not turn it on unless you talk to Ed or Dawn first. Nothing bad will happen except you might get data from a different window than you expect.
